The tourist will be welcomed by a peaceful atmosphere. In comparison to other cities in Bolivia, Sucre is quite small and you can enjoy the more quiet and realxed life. Everything is accessible on foot, the cafés and restaurants are focused on the centre of the city, as is nearly everything.
The residents of Sucre are very proud of their city, that was once declared as the capital of the new republic of Bolivia in 1825. But after the civil war in 1899 the seat of the government moved to La Paz and Sucre lost its status as the political centre. However, this hasn´t changed that Sucre still keeps the title of being the official and constitutional capital of Bolivia.
As the city centre of Sucre became World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO, so there is changes or destruction allowed. That helped alot to preserve the historical centre and to keep intact the colonial buildings. You will not see any high buildings, no neon signs, and the houses get whitened every year. The colonial buildings and the whole athmosphere give the city a nearly european flair. The best way to experience this is by strolling through its streets.
