The Train Cemetery

Follow the rusted railway line, that leads out of Uyuni, for 3km and you reach the first of the magnificent sites of the Salar. On a backdrop of pure white salt, the crumbling hulks of some of Bolivians most famous trains lie in their final resting place. Amongst the redish-brown steam locomotives are the first train the country ever saw and one of the last to be robbed by the famous 'Banditos Yanquis', Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Many of the hulks now display amusing or politically charged graffiti and the site is a popular picnic spot for tourists and young, local couples.
The Train Cemetery is the first or last stop on most tours of the Salar, but is well worth a trip to see it alone.
How To Get There:
Tour agencies are the best, and safest, way to get to the Train Cemetery. It is often included in tours of the Salar, whilst most tour agenices in town will offer a 2 or 3 hour trip to see it on its own. Ask around and remember that prices will be significantly less if you can get together a group of four or six.
