Las Siete Cascadas, otherwise known as 'The Seven Waterfalls', make a nice day trip out of Sucre.
Whilst the waterfalls themselves are not particularly spectacular - and you can only reach the first three in a normal day hike as you would need climbing equipment to reach the others - the surrounding natural scenery is superb and perfect for those who wish to go hiking in the mountains. There are also beautiful natural pools where you can take a refreshing swim and stay a while to sunbathe or picnic afterwards.
Taking the morning bus from Sucre you will reach a small village very close by. Here you can start the hike of approximately 3 km, walking down the road between the mountains until you reach a small bridge crossing a river. If the river isn´t very high you can walk along the river bank until you reach the first waterfall. This walk can be exhausting as you sometimes need to climb over the rocks to avoid the water, but the views from the river make it worth it.
The other option is to cross the bridge and follow the road to a small path at your left. Following it you will see the waterfall very shortly.
How To Get There:
The best time to visit the waterfalls is during November to April, as during the other months the river and natural pools will dry out.
From the centre you can take the bus "Q" that takes you to Villa Armonía. From here it is a 6 km walk following the road. Every half an hour the bus also goes to the small village of Alegría from where it is just a 4km hike to the waterfalls.
