The Toro Toro National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in Bolivia. Located 138 km from the city of Cochabamba, the small town of Toro Toro is the starting point for tours in the park. Framed by two very unusually folded and shaped mountain ranges, which converge with their sharp and eroded peaks, the valley around Toro Toro resembles an open crocodile mouth. The park offers an inexhaustible range of natural attractions, including spectacular canyons, rock cathedrals, waterfalls, and various caves. Not to forget the countless dinosaur track and footprints that can be found throughout the Toro-Toro plain. Our canyon trekking combines many of the park's remote natural attractions and is an adventure in every way, in an unexpectedly fascinating and surprising region, incredibly far off the beaten path.
Itinerary:
First Day: Cochabamba to Toro Toro, starting point of the canyon trek
The first day is mostly dedicated to the journey from Cochabamba to Toro Toro via an interesting route that has a lot to offer. After leaving the city of Cochabamba, you continue to the corn-growing region of the Valle Alto. Take a short stop at the colonial town of Tarata, with its rich history and beautiful central square. Continuing through the hilly landscape, we descend into the valley of the Rio Caine. The road meanders beautifully through a narrow gorge, later the valley opens up and offers a view of interesting colorful mountain formations of the Mizque mountain range in the north and deep canyons cut into the valley flank to the south. Our destination Toro Toro, located at 2800m in a side valley above the Rio Caine, is the starting point for our canyon trekking. In the afternoon we have time to admire the first and very impressive dinosaur tracks on the outskirts of the village. Overnight at the guest house in Torotoro. (Travel time approx. 4-5 hours) (-/-/-)
Second Day: Start of the Toro Toro canyon trek
Today you begin your 3-day canyon trek. You leave Toro Toro (2800m) on foot through light terrain with only slight climbs at the beginning, and with various stops at the countless dinosaur tracks in the area. Later on, you enter a canyon that starts narrow at the bottom, but opens up as you quickly gain altitude. At the end of the canyon the hike continues steeply uphill through pathless terrain, as the landscape and panoramic views over the Caine valley and the high plateau cut by canyons get more and more impressive. At the end of the day, you follow the gently rising mountain ridge to the first camp at 3650m. It is located near a labyrinth of red sandstone rocks - a magical place for adventurers. Overnight in a tent. (Walking time approx. 8 hours, 1200m ↑, 250m ↓, 17km, sleeping altitude 3650m). (B/BL/D)
Third Day: Toro Toro canyon trek
Today’s hike starts on a dirt road which makes it easy to warm up and find your pace. Soon you will reach the impressive rock formations of the “Ciudad de Itas” with today’s highlight - a huge rock cathedral open to the top - hidden inside a maze of narrow rock passages, caves, and eroded rocks resembling animals and mythical creatures,. Then you descend over pathless terrain into a small green valley, in order to ascend again over fields and past simple dwellings of local farmers. Again and again you pass interesting eroded rock formations. Before you reach the camp site for tonight, enjoy the suddenly unobstructed view of a very remote high valley worked by mountain farmers. Overnight in a tent. (Walking time approx. 8 hours, 650m ↑, 850m ↓, 19km, sleeping height 3400m). (B/L/D)
Fourth Day: End of the canyon trek and return to Cochabamba
Today is one of the most impressive hikes of the 3-day trek. Above the valley of the mountain farmers, you continue uphill for while and then over a pass on the high plateau with magnificent views over the canyon landscape. One of these canyons which cut deep into the plateau, leads us down into the Caine Valley. The panoramic path on the canyon rim offers breathtaking views. In Zigzag you master the steepest part of the descent and soon bathe your aching feet in the cool waters of the Caine river down in the valley (2100m). The vehicles for the trip to Cochabamba are already waiting here. (Walking time approx. 8 hours 200m ↑, 1500m ↓, 16 km, travel time approx. 4-5 hours) (B/BL/-) - END OF OUR SERVICES
