Carlos V Hostal, Potosi, Bolivia

Carlos V is one of the best hostels in Potosi. Located within metres of the Plaza 10 de Noviembre and just around the corner from some of the best bars and cafes in the city, it somehow manages to be peaceful and quiet.

The rooms are comfortably furnished and the brightly coloured walls give the place a cheery feel. This is helped by the communal kitchen and TV room, where it's hard not to get to know everyone staying. The only unhappy person you're likely to see is the owner, who can be a little fearsome, but thankfully he's not there often.

For aficionados of Potosi pilsner, they will have introduced their own range of micro-brewed beers by summer 2010.
