At the edge of the Amazon Basin on Bolivian territory, lies the department of Beni, covered by endless jungle and flooded plains called “pampas”. A wide and rich system of rivers, lakes and primary forest covers the region which Bolivia shares with Brazil in the north.
Description:
As you reach the small town of Trinidad, capital of the Beni department, you are welcomed by the heat and humidity of the tropical climate, as well as the exuberant vegetation of the evergreen tropical forest.
Arriving at the banks of the majestic Mamore River, a purely unique experience waits for you: An expedition on a riverboat along the biggest tributary of the Amazon on Bolivian territory, following its meanders and passing confluences of small rivers, indigenous settlements on the river banks, and secret places where we will meet the gorgeous pink sweet water dolphin “Bufeo” (Inia boliviensis), playing in the shallow waters and accompanying our boat for a while.
Within this remote and unspoiled natural paradise, the riverboat “Reina de Enin” combines expeditions and animal watching by canoe, on horseback or on foot, with the comfort of western civilization: Imagine having a warm shower and a comfy mattress after a long and exhausting jungle walk. Or enjoying an ice-cold beer sitting on the terrace of the boat in the upper level having the most extensive botanical garden of our planet just in front of you – the Bolivian Amazon.
Itinerary:
First Day: Flight to Trinidad, transfer to the river boat
Flight to Trinidad. A unique experience is waiting for you: An expedition through the waters of the most important Amazon tributary in Bolivian territory. The river cruise leads you along countless meanders through a vast jungle region, passing the confluences of small rivers and streams, sand banks, indigenous villages and places where you can observe the endemic and endangered pink river dolphin called „Bufeo“ (Inia Boliviensis). After your arrival in Trinidad, the capital of Beni Department, you will be greeted by a tropical hot and humid climate and an exotic jungle vegetation. On the banks of the majestic Mamoré river you will embark a motor boat and drive to the Ibare-Mamoré nature reserve where the riverboat “Reina de Enin” is anchoring. You check in to the so-called „Flotel“ (floating hotel) and start your adventure. Observe animals from the boat terrace and take some time to relax. Overnight on the riverboat „Reina de Enin“. (-/L/D)
Second Day: Activities from the boat
Today you will take a two to three hour hike through the jungle along one of the nature trails "Bosque de los Monos" or "Tras las huellas del Jaguar", where you will see interesting flora such as the Mapajo trees with their giant board roots, and with a bit of luck some other forest dwellers such as howler and capuchin monkeys. In the afternoon, visit Laguna Verde, Laguna Victoria or Laguna San Juan, meanders cut off by the river that turned to lakes. There you can fish for pirañas, which can be served in the evening, and observe different animals. You can also take a refreshing swim on the banks of the Rio Mamoré, or take a special kind of swim called “abubuya”: drift along the current of the river in a huge tire - a motor boat will bring you back to the ship. Overnight on the riverboat „Reina de Enin“. (B/L/D)
Third Day: Activities from the boat
In the morning, head to Estancia El Carmen, where you will ride on horseback through the savannahs and forests of the Llanos de Mojos, a wonderful way to see different bird species. Alternatively: Visit an indigenous Yuracaré community in Mangalito or Santa Maria del Pilar, where you experience a cultural exchange with the residents. In the afternoon, you cruise along on the riverboat and enjoy some time relaxing on the sun terrace. With a little luck, you will see a great variety of animal and bird species on the river banks. After dinner, we invite you to a nightly photo safari in search of caimans - various sounds of animals can be heard and you can admire the wonderful starry sky above you. Overnight on the riverboat „Reina de Enin“. (B/L/D)
Fourth Day: Transfer from the boat to Trinidad and flight to La Paz or Santa Cruz
In the morning you drive to the confluence of the Mamoré and Ibare rivers right in the heart of the nature reserve. Due to the different water temperatures, many different animal species populate the area and you can again take a wonderful swim accompanied by dolphins. After lunch, return by motorboat to the port of Los Puentes or Loma Suarez on the Rio Ibare and transfer to Trinidad airport. Return flight to La Paz or Santa Cruz. (B/-/-) END OF OUR SERVICES
